We tend to think of creativity as finite.
If someone is “creative” and works in a creative job, then creativity automatically happens, right?
Wrong.
Yes, there are people that are more creative than others. But even creatives have moments when that cherished creativity – the thing that they economically survive on – fails to show up.
I find the summer months to be particularly low on creativity. Summer is a time to relax, sit in the sunshine, take a trip, drink chilled wine and read a book.
But in reality, the work goes on.
Thankfully, I have a handy tool for banishing the blank page, which, as we all know, is every writer’s worst nightmare.
The magic solution
It’s incredibly simple.
- Take a piece of paper and a pen/pencil.
- Draw a line down the middle of the piece of paper (don’t worry about using a ruler, this is all about freestyling).
- In the left column, write what you are advertising or writing about.
- In the right column, write words and phrases associated with it.
As it’s summertime and I’ve just spent the last few months writing about very expensive eyewear, here’s an example with “luxury sunglasses” as the topic.

This is just a starting point, but there are already some copy options to play with.
Such as:
- Elevate your style with sophisticated frames.
- Crafted with premium materials.
- Exclusive eyewear collection.
- Timeless style from an iconic brand.
I think you get the point.
Basically, this method takes you away from the computer and gets the creative juices flowing. You can even do this in the garden or the park and catch some rays at the same time.
So next time you’re staring at a blank screen, or you need to come up with ideas fast, grab your notebook and indulge in some old school brainstorming.
